DUI Treatment Centers
Treatment centers or treatment programs can broadly be classified into residential treatment programs and out patient treatment programs.Residential Treatment Centers
A residential treatment program or residential treatment center (RTC) is a live-in facility providing treatment and/or therapy to people suffering from an issue related to alcohol, medication or drug use which has interfered with the normal activities of life. Residential treatment should also be considered as an approach to helping a person withdraw from the cycle of alcohol, medication or drug use.
There are generally two types of residential treatment centers: locked and unlocked. In a locked residential treatment facility, patients movements are severely restricted, usually to a single room or cell. By comparison, an unlocked residential treatment facility allows patients to move about the facility with relative freedom, but they are only allowed to leave the facility under specific conditions.
Residential treatment centers generally are medical facilities with a clinical approach and primarily provide behavior management training and treatment for adults and adolescents with serious issues. Studies of different treatment approaches have found that residential treatment is effective for individuals with a long history of addictive behavior.
RTCs offer a variety of structured programs used to accommodate their residents' needs.

Out Patient Treatment Programs
Out patient treatment programs can include regular group or individual counseling to address an alcohol, medication or drug issue. Such a program may be indicated where an individual remains able to function and perform many of the activities of daily life, but alcohol, medication or drug use has interfered with some activities of normal life. Oftentimes, out patient treatment programs supplement a twelve step program such as Alcoholics Anonymous. In other cases, a twelve step program supplements the treatment program.
If a person is repeatedly coming to the attention of law enforcement in an enforcement context where alcohol, medication, or drugs may be an underlying issue, a treatment program may be indicated. To some extent, extended first offender or multiple offender DUI schools have a treatment element targeting the underlying issues which led to the individual being arrested for driving under the influence.
